MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (July 8, 1997) -- Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced
that an additional 100 leading companies have recently chosen its new client and server software, Netscape
Communicator and Netscape SuiteSpot 3.0, for either their corporate messaging solution or to implement business-critical
applications for their Intranets and Extranets. With the addition of these 100 major wins, more than 200 enterprise
customers and large organizations -- which Netscape classifies as 'Design Wins' -- have already begun deployment of at
least 500 seats of the new Netscape software. These 200 companies represent a total of more than 2 million
seats for Netscape's solutions for messaging or Java/JavaScript applications.
"With more than 200 Design Wins, Netscape is right on target with its commitment to provide customers with the
necessary software solutions to create business-critical applications," said Mike Homer, senior vice president of marketing
at Netscape. "Just a little over a month ago, we announced 100 early wins for Netscape Communicator and Netscape
SuiteSpot before our products even shipped. Now, just a few weeks after shipping our products, we have doubled the
number of these Design Wins, indicating Netscape's strong penetration into the messaging and groupware
marketplace and showing the strong momentum we are seeing for our new products."
Netscape's 200 Design Wins include such companies as Adobe Systems Incorporated; Audi; Banco Popular De Puerto Rico;
BC TELECOM; Bell Canada; Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia; Booz-Allen & Hamilton; Browning-Ferris
Industries; Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA); Dresdner Bank; Edward Jones; Federal Express Corporation;
Federal Reserve System; Genentech; Knight-Ridder, Inc.; Harris Corporation; Lawyer's Title; LSI Logic; National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Goddard; O'Melveny & Myers LLP; Parametric Technology Corp.; Paul,
Hastings, Janovsky & Walker LLP; PPD Pharmaco Inc.; Shell; Sprint; U.S. Information Agency; U.S. Patent &
Trademark; U.S. Senate and W.R. Grace & Co. Members of Netscape Solution Expert, a program for resellers,
consultants, and system and network integrators, continue to play a key role in enabling Netscape to deliver its new
Netscape Communicator client software and Netscape SuiteSpot server software effectively to so many customers in such a
short period of time.
Examples of how Netscape customers are deploying Netscape's open, cross-platform technology include the following:
- O'Melveny & Myers LLP, working closely with Data Systems West (DSW), a leading Enterprise Systems Integrator and
member of the Netscape Solution Expert program, has created a 1,300-seat Intranet based on Netscape client and server
software to share expertise and best practices in real time across its large, geographically dispersed law firm. As part of
its Intranet, called OMM.Net, O'Melveny & Myers employees will be able to take advantage of newsgroups to discuss
specific cases and share information, link to vast internal and external research sources (indexed using Netscape server
software) and access company, client and legal information. OMM.Net includes various Java-based applications created
with NetDynamics to perform such tasks as validating dates and other information in online forms. DSW is in the process
of using JavaScript and NetDynamics-based applications to enable the firm's employees to complete forms and perform
other 'self-service' functions that require interaction with the firm's databases. "Because we are a knowledge-based
business, our ability to share expertise in an efficient way is key to our success," said Steve Antion, partner and member of
the firm's technology committee at O'Melveny & Meyers. "DSW's integration expertise and Netscape's open,
cross-platform software provided us with a solution that will enable everyone in the firm to have access to a single source
of information, no matter what format the data is in or where the data resides."
- Bell Canada, working closely with Netscape partner Hewlett-Packard, is using Netscape Communicator and SuiteSpot to
create a leading-edge internal electronic mail system for 38,000 Bell Canada and Bell Sygma employees. Specifically, Bell
Canada is using Netscape Communicator Professional Edition, Netscape Messaging Server and Netscape Directory Server
software. Bell Canada anticipates that its world class company-wide email system will result in an annual savings of $15
million through increased productivity, and an additional $11 million in reduced administration, hardware and software
costs.
- Edward Jones, one of the largest domestic financial services firms, with over 3,600 branch offices nationwide, has
singled out Netscape Communicator and Netscape Messaging Server as the basis for its messaging system. Jones' chief
information officer, Rich Malone, noted the need to "do away with a multiplicity of homegrown solutions" as the company
moved its internal communications focus to its Intranet. "Netscape's messaging solution gives our investment
representatives a consistent way of communicating a vast amount of information," said Malone. In addition, Edward Jones
is developing an Extranet to provide service to its more than 2.5 million customers, using Netscape Enterprise Server and
Netscape Directory Server. "We needed to find a solution that is highly scalable and robust," Malone said. "As we
develop our Intranet, we will expand its use to our customers to provide greater accessibility to their accounts. By linking
our customers to our Intranet, we will be able to give them the convenience of looking at their account information over
the Internet any time they choose."
- Harris Corporation, a 27,000 person electronics and communications company with offices worldwide, is using Netscape
client software and Netscape Enterprise Server and Directory Server for a range of mission-critical applications within its
Electronic Systems Sector. Netscape was a hands-down choice for Harris ESS because of its need for support on multiple
platforms including UNIX and NT. Harris was looking for a cost-effective solution that would enable its users to gain
easy access to corporate information. An application soon to be rolled out is a financial reporting system using Netscape
clients as the front end to a PeopleSoft financials virtual reports server. Other applications already rolled out include an
engineering symbols library that significantly shortens development cycles and increases productivity, and a number of
applications that are key to work on government classified projects, made possible through the advanced security features
of Netscape software. Over 5,000 seats of a total of 10,000 have already been rolled out. "We provide solutions for users
on Windows NT, Windows 95 and UNIX platforms -- we need to deploy one client across all of those platforms in order
to run a successful, productive shop and Netscape is the only company who could sign up to do that for us," said Sheryl
Olguin, leader of Harris ESS' Web Center of Excellence.
- Shell Exploration & Production uses Netscape client and server software principally to give employees access to
information and applications including databases, manuals and engineering standards. By utilizing these products, Shell is
seeking to improve information access significantly, saving time and money. It is part of the Shell E&P; sector strategy to
pursue open and non-proprietary information system standards because smooth and high-quality global communication is
vital. Netscape technology provides Shell a cross-platform approach based on open standards, which fits well with its
operating style as a global company in which worldwide access is enabled, while allowing a wide range of choices for local
implementation.
Netscape SuiteSpot 3.0 and Netscape Communicator provide enterprise customers with an integrated client/server software
solution that enables organizations to communicate, access and share information easily both within the enterprise and with
external customers and partners. Netscape SuiteSpot and Netscape Communicator are award-winning suites of products
used for messaging, collaboration and groupware.
